Lovina - 50th anniversary
Lovina Festival 2003, celebrating 50 years of Lovina.
The following text and pictures give you an impression what was shown at the Lovina Festival.
Gambuh Tantri is a kind of traditional drama which
presents dialogues about folk stories. This particular performance of the
festival shows the story about King of Gunda Wiasa who tried to find a
special husband for his daughter. In the story he puts up a set of criteria;
the boy should be strong, knowledgeable, powerful, spiritual, friendly and a
goodlooking one. For this he should make a competition. Being a winner in
the fight is one criterion how a boy proves himself to be a powerful or
strong.

Gebug Ende is a traditional game where people
fighting using rattan sticks and protectors. The game was played for
religious purposes, such as praying the rain would fall when weather caused
problems for the local farmers, running out of water for their rice fields.
The game was dedicated to God Shiva, the God of fertility. |
| Bondres is a modern play. All the dancers are wearing
masks or heavy make-up. This play is often performed on Balinese television.
During the play they speak mixed languages; from Balinese (high and low) to
Indonesian and English. Via the dancers of Bondres authorities often leave
messages to the people, in particular messages or information in connection
with development programs. |
