Lovina - 50th anniversary

Lovina Festival 2003, celebrating 50 years of Lovina.

Holiday Holiday

The following text and pictures give you an impression what was shown at the Lovina Festival.

Ngoncang is a unique form of traditional music which is common for people in the village. Presented by six to eight women, this music is presented by thumping wooden clubs on a wooden trough. Traditionally it is played whenever the moon disappears during the full moon period.

People hope this music can bring back the moon into existence. In this occasion the moon is believed to be swallowed by Kalura, the giant who had a frightening face but no neck and body. Kalura himself was the one killed by Dewa Indra, the God of wisdom in Hindu belief. He was killed because he drank all water of life (tirta kehidupan) which was believed came up from the sea after being shaken using the top of Mahameru mountain by both groups
of Dewas in the heaven and Giants who promised to share this water of life after disappearing from the sea. Being witnessed by Dewa Indra, one giant drank up all water with the wish that one day he would be able to control the universe including the heaven.

Megoak-goakan is a mass dance annually presented in Panji village North Bali, in particular one day before the silent day (Nyepi Day), during this important day in Bali. The dancers present the story how Panji Sakti King, the King of North Bali during the 1600’s fought the Blangbangan Kingdom of east java and his troops forced the king o surrender. Panji Sakti was the founder of Singaraja city. He was one of the sons of Gelgel King, the King of Bali who ruled North Bali during the 1600’s.
Janger is also a mass dance, What is unique in this dance is that several male and female dancers are singing and dancing together accompanied by a set of traditional music specifically designed for the dance. This popular dance often presents songs of love and songs of criticism of the human behavior in society. It is believed that this dance actually is a development of Sangiang Dance, the trance dance. In the village of Menyali, in Sawan district, for example, Janger is considered as a dance which is believed to be able to drive away the evil spririts which are considered to bring problems to the village.
